Update #7

They scheduled Ryan for surgery to fix the bones on his face (orbital and chin) for Wednesday, March 12.

Ryan was having a lot of trouble breathing. First they thought it was because he had a lot of fluids and mucus in his airway that he wasn't strong enough to clear on his own. Then, they thought that his lung had re-collapsed. But, a chest x-ray showed that the lung was fine. Finally, they decided that they were going to do a scan using this dye to check and see if he had any blood clots. They found two clots. One is his arm and one in his leg.

There was some debate between the intensive care doctors and the neurosurgeons about using blood thinner to counter-act the clots. In the mean time, they sent a doctor up to talk about a filter that they can insert into the leg vein (the more dangerous clot location). The filter would allow blood to pass through, but not clots. It is removable and would only take about 30 minutes to insert.

The neurosurgeons decided that it was okay for the intensive care doctors to use blood thinners to counter-act the clots. This is the better option between the two (thinners v. filter). So, they decided to pursue this option.

They had to put Ryan back on a respirator during the time when the doctors were deciding between the thinners and the filter. His stats were getting too low and they wanted to make sure his body and brain were getting the oxygen they needed.

During the middle of the night on Monday, they did a CT scan of Ryan's brain to make sure the blood thinners weren't causing a bleed in the brain.
