Day 1

Today was a busy first day. We arrived at QLI around 10 a.m. We immediately had a couple meetings with some of the administrative staff at the facility. We filled out a bunch of paperwork and had lunch.

After lunch, Ryan had a PT assessment with his new physical therapist. The therapist did some range of motion, mobility and strength assessments. Then, he had Ryan walk a bit with a quad cane. He was a little more "hands off" than some of the therapists at McGuire. But, Ryan seemed to do really well. Instead of the therapist holding on to Ryan, he simply put a gait belt around Ryan and held on to that as Ryan walked. He was taking some really good steps. He still needed the therapist's assistance and coaching, but seemed to be more stable and balanced. The therapist also weighed Ryan. He's put on some weight since his accident. (Must be all the ice cream. haha!)

A little later, Ryan had a vocational assessment. The therapist asked Ryan a bunch of questions about his job duties so she could figure out different ways to simulate his work activities in therapy.

Ryan had a health assessment with a nurse. She gave him a shot in the arm that would test his exposure to TB. She also did some other vital sign checks and evaluated his medications.

Ryan and I unpacked all of his stuff into his new room. We were very excited that he has a room with a private bathroom and TV. The room is a good size with a twin size bed, recliner, and a couple windows. He also has a dresser, night stand, and large closet.

Lunch and dinner are served in the house in "family style" containers. The patients can dish up as much as they like. If they don't like the meal being served, they can use the kitchen to make something else, or have left-overs from a previous meal. The food is really good, too! :)

Ryan and I hooked up the Wii that one of his friends bought him. We had it hooked up in Richmond, but never really had the opportunity to play it. We tried out a couple of the games (bowling, tennis, shooting, etc.). We loved it! It was so much fun. I can see how it is going to help Ryan cognitively as well as with his coordination.
