Update #66

Something very exciting and monumental happened today...read on to discover what happened. ;)

In PT today, Ryan did some core and leg exercises on the mat (leg kicks, bridges, etc.). The therapist had him walk with the tall walker out and around the PT unit. He is getting better at holding himself upright and not buckling his left knee. He still needs to work on shifting his weight and placing his steps, but he is getting better every day. :)

In OT, Ryan did some left shoulder exercises with his arm in an elevated sling. He also did some left arm exercises at a table. He had to extend his arm out and punch a beach ball.

In KT, Ryan did some core strengthening exercises sitting in his chair. Then the therapist had Ryan stand and rest his hands on an elevated mat and shift his weight from right to left.

My parents came to visit today. They ran out to get Ryan and I some Wendy’s fast food. So, Ryan finally got to eat his first cheeseburger since his accident. He ate the entire burger, some fries and a chocolate frosty. He really enjoyed it. (So, did I.)

In Speech, Ryan worked on the correct pronunciation of different words. The therapist discovered that he is having problems with “st” combinations. She did some memory exercises and asked him to remember three specific words over the weekend and repeat them to her on Monday.

Here is the exciting and monumental part. A group of guys from Ryan’s command came up this afternoon. They presented Ryan with a Bronze Star for “Meritorious Service.” It was for the work Ryan did during his last two deployments. Ryan was honored to accept it and I was moved by the presentation. (I don’t think I could be any more impressed and inspired by Ryan.)
