Update #30

Ryan had some company today. He was visited by some friends from his command and an old friend from when he was stationed in Florida. I think he really enjoyed the company. He was actively trying to participate in the conversation (despite the fact that he isn't talking yet). He had his eyes open and was watching everything. He was answering yes and no questions with his fingers. He made a fist at one point after a few too many good-natured jokes were made and held up a very specific finger (wink wink) on command. It's comforting to know that Ryan's personality and sense of humor are unharmed.

Ryan's schedule changed a little today. He went to occupational therapy first. They worked with him on supporting his weight with his arms while leaning on his side. They also worked with him on holding his head upright and strengthening his neck muscles.

A vision therapist came to see him during his occupational therapy session and again in the afternoon. She was telling me that she is confident that Ryan has double vision. But, she was going to do a full assessment in the afternoon. I was out at lunch when she came in the afternoon, but I'll get the full story from her tomorrow.

Physical therapy worked with Ryan in the afternoon. The put him in standing position again and exercised his arms and legs.

Speech therapy performed their usual tests. But, today, they brought in a small touch-screen device that will help Ryan communicate. He was able to pick out objects and words on the screen, but he was having a hard time controlling his hand (probably tired from the therapy sessions). They didn't leave it with him. But, as his hand control and vision get better, he will be able to use that screen to communicate what he is feeling, wanting, and thinking.

Jen - this blog rocks, I was actually able to find it, which is good because I am not that smart. Great seeing you and Ryan today - I am amazed how much improvement there was in a week - look foward to following the progress in the next few months. Hang in there and tell Ryan we are pulling for him, hopefully he can master that electronic voice thing - that is too funny.

Hopefully Ryan can master that electronic voice thing, priceless stuff. Look forward to following the progress over the next few months - hang in there and let Ryan know that Dawn and I are pulling for him.

We wish we were closer to be able to come visit! Who was his visitor that he was stationed in FL with? We would like to upload messages to YouTube, can you get a laptop near him to see?

Lots of love,

Steve, Melissa and Makayla
